Attract the Right Job or Clientele:  Are You Building Solid Business Relationships?

Business development and sales can be agonizing at times. It’s the truth and we have to deal with it. There are a number of ways to lighten the burden and increase the odds for being successful. Given that the job hunt and interviews follow the sales cycle, the same strategies apply.

Be personable, be human, and serve your audience well.”

My Story

Extensive research prior to any type of meeting makes a huge different for the potential in store. My goal has always been to gain some familiarity upfront about the person, people at the company, clients, and issues within the industry. By the time we meet, the conversation is credible and trust develops more quickly. Empathy shown, by sharing similar experiences and ideas, builds sound relationships along with the sale.

Today, we utilize a variety of mediums to connect with people. It’s the prompt attention and the personal touch that make a difference. Two examples from the past 24 hours are:

eMail

When someone includes my first name in their message to me, and their contact information beneath, I take the time to respectfully respond whether or not the message is of interest. Here is the response to my message,

“…your response itself has been inspiring to me. Even though we do not work in a similar domain, you made an effort to visit my website and that is a privilege for me.”

We both took the time to respond. This also signifies the “qualify and match” technique of which I frequently write. At some point, there may be an opportunity for both of us. Not many people take the time to personally respond, and so it’s another opportunity to distinguish my personal brand.

Social Media

As an active user of Twitter, I have gained a sizable audience. I freely share meaningful content. A small portion of the time, I include a link with the tweet.

Yesterday evening, I received this tweeted message from a follower:  “Thank you for all of the valuable content that you provide to sales professionals, I appreciate and enjoy your posts!”  Next, I received a question regarding my training services.

The quote above deserves being repeated: “Be personable, be human, and serve your audience well.”

Your Story:

Review your past activities. These three questions are provided to potentially improve effort for the future:

  • How do you initiate email eg. “hey there” or “Hi John”?
  • Do you check messages and respond quickly on the social media sites?
  • Are you sharing valuable insights or simply focusing on hopefully getting the sale?

Although the suggested effort might slow you down a bit, consider how it might improve your sales ability and business.
