Attract the Right Job or Clientele:  Change Your Delivery to Improve Your Outcome

We receive so many messages and email that it becomes overwhelming at times. Even worse is when we find those messages to be annoying.

Communicate from your prospect’s point of view.

My Story

The other day I wrote about someone offering me sales training. But the past week, I’ve been receiving a series of seemingly personalized messages stating I was negligent by not replying back. Given it appeared as if we had spoken, I politely replied that the service offered was not of interest. But the same message (received 5 times) appeared today.

Frustrated, I picked up the phone to call the person to let him know of the situation. His voice indicated great surprise by the call and the feedback. His reaction had me realize these were automated messages that are likely turning off many recipients.

Meanwhile, another message received raised many eyebrows as well. An agreement was worked out on behalf of a group to provide a unique service. Apparently, the group was to be first informed about the offering before any email is to be sent. That did not happen. Without warning, a solicitation was sent to everyone. Now the partners need to work out a future arrangement and renegotiate the terms.

And another email received indicated there are a lot of sensitive minded people in cyberspace. I always thought I was sensitive, but apparently not as much as many others. This one included a straight forward request with an offer of reciprocation, yet for some unknown reason, it offended some.

For a moment, also give due consideration to what these types of miscommunication will do during a job hunt.  Serious consideration should be given to everything you put in writing.

Your Story

The last thing we want is to offend another with email. The better approach is to understand the mindset of your audience or prospective client. If you aren’t certain of what is on their mind, hold a focus group or network and ask the needed questions to be answered.

These three steps should help considerably:

  • Begin the communication from their perspective.
  • Think about how someone might receive the message you intend to send, and how you might react if you were that other someone.
  • Then tweak the message to the benefit of all involved.
Problems

The problem with sending out ill-received messages is that they may easily hurt your reputation. The underlying problem is that people are too anxious to sell. Consequently, they forget to give their messaging due consideration as to how it will be received.

Your best approach is to follow the Golden Rule – do onto others as you would like others to do onto you. If you can honestly say to yourself, that you do not see anything troublesome with the message about to be sent, it might be a good idea to test a small group of peers first. Once you again agreement that the communication is good to go, you may then move forward with confidence.

Sales Tips
  1. Pay attention to complaints about your messaging.
  2. Figure out where you may have erred.
  3. Tweak the messaging.
  4. Test send to a trusted group to get their thoughts on the revised message.
  5. One approved, send the message to your intended audience.
  6. Monitor the reception of your message for further tweaks.
  7. Read the messaging of other people to see which you like best and why.
  8. Tweak your messaging once more to monitor once again.
  9. Should response and feedback be favorable, you are free to send.
  10. Celebrate success!
