For most of us, there are times in our lives when we feel like the square peg trying to fit into the round hole; we wish for one magic formula for when all else fails. Nothing seems to work. Worse yet is when it seems no one understands what it is we are trying to accomplish.  Feeling misunderstood and under-appreciated comes to mind.

My Story

I’m no exception and certainly experienced the scenario described above. Yet what I was trying to achieve seemed so right, I couldn’t let my ideas go. For a few years, I hid out on social media. People talked behind my back. But another phenomenon began to take place. People began talking about me online, too, but this time in a good way!

Slowly but surely, I began to meet those with whom I held mutual admiration. The outcome became:

  • A fast friendship with people to be counted on
  • Amazing collaborative projects
  • Awaking each day with a smile

 

Stuart’s Story

Yesterday, I was speaking with “Stuart” who had a great idea. Yet no one wanted to give him accolades let alone funds to move forward. Most likely, he is a few years ahead of when the idea will become popular. He is considering all options now for his next steps.

For those of us who appear to be forward thinkers, it takes a long time for the rest of the population to catch up. The most important stabilizing strategy to put into effect is to surround yourself with those who are also forward thinkers. When you do, quitting becomes out of the question. Instead, motivation to find the winning element allows us to carry on.

The most important element (according to me) is what you hold most important for career or business. Frequently others will want to dictate what you “should do”. While you may wish to accommodate others as much as possible, your future belongs in your control.

Strategy for maintaining control includes:

  • Frequently revisiting your largest vision for living your legacy
  • Admitting where you might have gone off track and making revisions to the plan
  • Creating milestones for a more direct route of getting to where you wish to be

In the process be more discerning about the people to whom you listen and take advice. Seek out those who are encouraging and provide complementary insights to what you believe. Lastly, partner when the opportunity arises with those few people whose work you admire and see benefit for all those involved.

  1. Determine which processes annoy you most to eliminate from future agendas.
  2. Focus on the activities you most enjoy.
  3. Leverage the activities that are most enjoyable.
  4. Take note of the people who admire your work to find synergy.
  5. Seek to find collaborative projects with those you find a mutual admiration.
  6. As the projects build, create collaborative social media activity.
  7. As your social media activity blossoms, increased interest in your work takes hold.
  8. Soon you are at the top of your game with many, many admirers.
  9. A portion of your new admirers will convert to new clients.
  10. Your new clients will refer you to those they know who are in need.
