Do you have options available?

Recently I was asked to provide a service at no charge.  Locally, I will do this for ocmmunity service but to travel a distance including multiple modes of transportation, it would have been a money losing proposition.  I considered my options.  And then I provided four options from which the potential client could choose.

Given the request was regarding my information for getting HIRED! and free was part of the request, I provided two such options:  

1. Provide tips via a Skype conference call.

2. My website tab, Gifts for You, offers a number of interviewing articles, recorded radio interviews on the subject, and a 20 minute PowerPoint presentation all free of charge.

Next came the fee based services.  Given this was a requesting job search group, I offered the idea they commit to purchasing a set number of copies of my book, HIRED! How to Use Sales Techniques to Sell Yourself On Interviews.  The margin of profit is tiny but it would at least make up for the cost of travel plus a little.

Last of all, on April 27, I am co-hosting An Evening of Inspiration or "Be Inspired to Get HIRED!" and suggested their members meet me there.  The fee is slightly higher at $65 but includes a copy of the book, great networking and a 45 minute presentation of inspiration and specific sales skills to get Hired!  A 501C is backing the event to provide resources for Pancreatic Cancer and Parkinson's Disease patients.

The next time you are asked to deliver goods for free, take a moment to consider all the possibilities that might make sense.  Is business development a possibility and is there a way that everyone will benefit?  

When you offer multiple choices and a range from free to small fee when asked to deliver for free, you stand a far better chance of coming to agreeable terms as well as enjoying a very Smooth Sale!

Collaboration is the one word that will transform your career or business.  Helping others produces a reciprocity otherwise not found.  Together you reach wider audiences, potential clients or hiring managers that enables greater than ever possibilities.

I met Valeri Bocage, Founder and CEO of Powerful Women International a number of years ago.  We were both beginning in our ventures.  It was a road of uncertainty but we felt compelled to follow the windy paths that motivated us to find what lie before us.  Every once in a while we would get together to compare notes and offer possible referrals.

We have each met wonderful people through one another.  Friendships and clients blossomed as did our enterprises.  Remaining connected and promoting one another's events as well as actively participating increased our possibilities further.  

On March 8, this year, in celebration of International Women's Day, at the San Francisco Mark Hopkins InterContinental Hotel, we will join forces to inspire and motivate other wonderful women with personal stories, educational breakout sessions, and networking.  .  And it is with pride that I announce, I will be one of the honorees on that day.  I do hope you will join Valeri and I in our celebration!

Persistence Gets You to Goal

So sorry...
 

Have you ever felt as if a construction crew was required on your behalf?  Experiencing detours on job interviews, sales or just in developing business can be very frustrating to say the least.  But persistence is the name of the game.

In sales, we were taught a "no" means one step closer to a "yes".  As you become more proficient, your odds for gaining a sale increase dramatically from the stated 10%.  Learning from errors or what went wrong mechanically will eventually get you to where you need to be in order to launch foward.  

I admit, there are times when it feels as if giving up would be a good thing.  However, giving up isn't in my vocabulary and I just can't do it.  So I persist through trial and error as well as seek help to get past the tough spots.  Each time valuable lessons have been learned and advancement then seems swift.  

Moving forward with a positive mindset and determination will get you on the path of the Smooth Sale!

Targeting Your Audience Interests

Knowing what interests your audience is vital for growing your business. Likewise, if your audience is hiring managers, your next job depends upon the researched knowledge.  How do you find it?

Nowadays it is far easier to determine the stronger interets of those to whom we wish to sell.  All of our postings whether articles, blogs, tweets or almost anywhere else, will receive "likes", "shares" and comments.  The ones receiving the most interaction are obviously where we should spend more time on creating further product, services and content.  Facebook went as far as to put an "insights" button on our fan pages for us to discover where the most interaction took place.

The marketing research today takes little time.  At a glance we can tell where our strongest pull lies.  When we pay attention and do something with it, that's when we are able to more quickly build our brand and put together a more effective branding effort.  In the effort include relationship building with those responding to you and you will make more sales.  In fact they will become a Smooth Sale!

Turn rejection into celebration

A friend and I were talking about how rejection motivates us to move further and more quickly in our quest while most people take weeks to get moving again.  

We both have the sales gene and recognize that the more no's you receive, the closer you get to a Yes!  In fact, on average, we were told in the early years of sales training, it takes approximately 10 attempts to find the right possibility for a sale or job.

One out of 10 attempts leads to a 10% success rate.  However, as you tweak and improve upon delivery, your success rate will increase.  Therefore it is wise to pay attention to some of the success principles:

1.  "No" very often is a request for more information.  Find out why it is being said.

2.  Job interviews – ask why the other candidate was chosen; while it's difficult to hear, the information may be helpful later

3.  Ask for constructive feedback whether a meeting for a sale or job to find what would improve your chance for success the next time

Everything you undertake requires practice.  Before you are accepted or rejected, line up more possibilities.  The momentum keeps the excitement up.  Even more important, as you interview better on each new appointment, your delivery becomes superb enabling you to ask for a higher salary.  

There is always a silver lining to the dark cloud.  When you believe in it, you will find the Smooth Sale!

Whichever group you belong to whether for interivewing or business development, and for in-person or online, everyone should have the opportunity to be a star. When we treat one another as equals with having value to bring to the meetings, so much more will be learned to enable our growth at a faster pace.

Online, do you pose questions and provide insight?  Do you encourage others to do the same on your pages and in your groups?  In-person, do you dominate or ask questions and once again, encourage dialogue?  As a member are you encouraged to share your work with other members?  As a whole, does your group have the underlying understanding that everyone will work to promote one another?

Over the past couple of years, I have noticed an increase in being asked to share tips in the blogs of others.  Some showcase 10 "experts" while others may go as high as 50 advisors.  Imagine the difference between putting out a sole article or belonging to a group whereveryone tweets, likes, +1 and shares the writing.  This link provides one such example.  The promotion is obviously exponential.

Eliminate Wasted Time for Increased Efficiency and Results

Upon becoming very efficient and achieving much each working day, one feels as if they have become a champion and on top of the world.  So for the New Year, here are a few tips learned over the years that may help you too become more efficient to accomplish more on your agenda.

1.  Confirm appointments that require travel whether by car or plane

2.  When you arrange a distant in-person appointment, try to arrange additional ones in the same area

3.  As requests are made of you, prioritize which will be most meaningful for your business and provide the better ROI for time and effort

4.  Eliminate distractions

5.  Remain current on the follow-up tasks

6.  Prioritize what needs to be accomplished each quarter

7.  Set milestones for each month

8.  Prioritize tasks for the week

9.  Keep a running and prioritized task list for each working day

10. Sync your online and manual calendars; and those of others on your team
 

Using these pointers should help you to achieve more in a given day and get to your ultimate goals more quickly.  This is true both for career and business.  

Of course, exceptions usually exist and Tip #1 fits this category in regard to interviews.  In this case, I would suggest not to confirm the appointment as this might give the company an excuse to cancel.  For business though it shows you are serious about your work and your clientele.

Upon becoming efficient and effective, motivation increases for creating new projects to see what you might accomplish next.  It all becomes a very Smooth Sale!

Bottom lining your activities applies both to accepting work and building your business.  

In terms of the job hunt, consider the commute expense, possible new wardrobe required, salary offered and the reward of the job.  Will it be worthwhile?  

Your business requires a serious reconsideration of all the areas in which you invested time and money.  Are they all paying off or do some need to be eliminated?

Bottom lining your activities may include reading your credit card statements to see which services are being paid monthly but produce nothing or are not actually being used.  Are you participating in activities that require monetary and time investment but offer little in return?  

Another factor to keep in mind is to have multiple streams of income so that when in a varied economy, while one strream may not be working well, the others may.  For instance some coaches only have their hourly fee for coaching in place.  They would be wise to transfer their knowledge into some type of book, training or speaking event.

Be swift to cut venues that do not work well and maximize the ones that do.  Create additional services or products from the ones that produce the best.   When you take the time to seriously consider your plan, whether for business or career, you will be more assured of enjoying the Smooth Sale!

While many companies believe they are planning for the long-term, they are actually being short-sighted.  The missing element is considering the ramification(s) for every new action to be implemented.  

For example, to cope with the economy, the news stated Japan slowly but surely let go primarily of their male workforce due to having paid them more than the women who they chose to retain.  This obviously increased  cash flow for the company, and enabled the women which I'm all for, but the decision to ignore balance affected the entire population.  The women have far less discretionary money to spend.  The money they do have is spent not so much on electronics (Japan's previously thriving consumer sector) but is more focused now on travel, cosmetics and accessories.  The one decision affected Japan's economy in multiple ways.

By reading the business news, we entrepreneurs may learn many free lessons of what to do along with what not to do.  As you consider tweaks in your business plan and major changes, take the time to analyze the "what if" scenario first.  Determine how each change may affect your day to day business as well as the long term.  How will your business development effort change and ultimately affect your branding effort?  How will it affect your intended clientele?  

When you take the time to seriously consider your plan, whether for business or career, you will be more assured of enjoying the Smooth Sale!
