Attract the Right Job or Clientele: Sales Tip #687

Celebrate with Clients and Hiring Companies

I wish with tulip magnolia blossoms

This past weekend I celebrated a BIG birthday.  Today I was calling friends and writing notes to those who brought something special.  Together we recalled events, I relived the special moment and excitement was regenerated through the communication.

It is the regenerating of excitement that will land you the job you desire or additional business and sales.  "Mary" wrote thank you notes to everyone who interviewed her last week.  Within minutes she received back equally excited email from everyone with whom she corresponded.  To her great delight, Mary soon heard HIRED!

When your prospects become actual clients, be certain to write thank you notes.  Recap why you are excited to be working with your clients and what they may expect in return.  A week or two later, check in by phone or in person to see how they are enjoying what they just bought and if any extra sevice may be needed.

By cultivating excitement, you harvest big reward.  Additional sales, career advancement and increased business are earned by showing sincerity, holding the other party's interests at heart and delivering on your promises.  Add an ounce of fun and your outcome will be better than ever expected leading to a very Smooth Sale!

On March 8th we will be celebrating International Women's Day.  The event in San Francisco will take place at the Mark Hopkins InterContinental Hotel. For Details and Registration please click here.

Plant relationship seeds well to harvest desired results

Monkey

Collaboration is the one word that will transform your career or business.  Helping others produces a reciprocity otherwise not found.  Together you reach wider audiences, potential clients or hiring managers that enables greater than ever possibilities.

I met Valeri Bocage, Founder and CEO of Powerful Women International a number of years ago.  We were both beginning in our ventures.  It was a road of uncertainty but we felt compelled to follow the windy paths that motivated us to find what lie before us.  Every once in a while we would get together to compare notes and offer possible referrals.

We have each met wonderful people through one another.  Friendships and clients blossomed as did our enterprises.  Remaining connected and promoting one another's events as well as actively participating increased our possibilities further.

On March 8, this year, in celebration of International Women's Day, at the San Francisco Mark Hopkins InterContinental Hotel, we will join forces to inspire and motivate other wonderful women with personal stories, educational breakout sessions, and networking.  .  And it is with pride that I announce, I will be one of the honorees on that day.  I do hope you will join Valeri and I in our celebration!

Our goal is for all women to achieve their dreams.  The motivation and inspiration you receive will put you on the wave of the Smooth Sale!

How Resumes Differ From Country to Country

Just how important is having a country-specific resume to your chances of getting employed? Can the resume that got you a job in the UK be used for the Australian job market? Do you really have to design a new resume depending on the country?

The answer is simple. Just as every resume and cover letter you write needs to be targeted and focused toward the company you are applying for, the same concept is applied toward the job market you are applying for. Different countries expect and require certain information to be present on resumes, and therefore it is critical that your new resume meets the unique requirements of that country.

Just because one country requires including personal details such as marital status or date of birth does not mean this standard applies to others. Not only can this be seen as inappropriate, it can also possible be illegal, and your resume will be deleted before it has even been read!

European requirements

Recently in Europe, the rules for resume writing changed substantially. As part of the European Union (EU), all members follow the same resume criteria and format. The Europass CV was created to “provide citizens with the opportunity to present in clear and comprehensive way information on their qualifications and competences”.

This is a fantastic idea for people applying for roles in Europe as there is a standard template to complete that avoids issues such as cultural differences and different requirements between the countries.

While this may be good for a French national applying for a role in Belgium, the rules change when applying to countries such as the USA, Australia or Asia.

It is typical to see information such as nationality, date of birth and gender on European and Asian resumes.

In South Africa it is even required to have even further personal information such as ID number and ethnicity (the latter to clarify one’s BEE or affirmative action status).

In Australia and the US, however, stricter privacy laws make this personal information unnecessary. In the US, an employer has no legal right to know your age. (They do have a right, however, to ask your age only if local, state, or federal law requires that employees be over a certain age.)

USA differences

In today’s society the terms “CV” and “resume” are often used interchangeably. Take note, however, if you are applying for a job in the USA, as there are major differences between a “resume” and a “CV”.

An American Curriculum Vitae (CV) is NOT the same as a CV from countries around the world.  What countries outside of the USA know as a "Curriculum Vitae" (or "CV") is called also called a "resume"

In the USA, the "Curriculum Vitae" is not a resume – it is a longer document and is usually written only by a researcher, educator, or academic.

Thinking of including a picture?

When it comes to putting a picture on your resume, different countries have different approaches. In the UK you would never attach a photo, whereas in Germany or France you would. Many Asian countries also include pictures with their applications. In the US and Australia it is not recommended or encouraged.

My personal opinion is to leave your picture off your resume. The most important aspect of your resume is the content and it’s vital to ensure that the reader of your resume is more interested in your skills than what you look like.

With all the differences between resumes around the world, it’s important that you do your research into the country before submitting your resume. A professional resume writer can often help you with the “dos” and “do nots” of resume writing in a certain country, and he or she can also provide assistance with resume format, structure and presentation.

With any resume (no matter where you are applying in the world), focus your content on achievements and value-added duties you have performed. At the end of the day, the employer wants to know how you can add value and what skills, experience and expertise you can bring to the business.

And finally, never embellish or fabricate achievements or qualifications. These will often be exposed sooner or later and can result in dismissal, expulsion or even criminal prosecution in those countries with punitive legal codes.

How to Use Speaking

Downscaling training instructor

Speaking well will help you to advance your career as well as grow your business.  Expressing yourself with confidence will attract the right attention enabling the achievement your goals.

Note:  Today's Guest Post is by Janis Petit

Getting more clients is usually the biggest challenge for most entrepreneurs. Lack of sales can result in frustration, struggle, stagnation and even yielding to thoughts of quitting. One of the most common reasons for this is that you may not be promoting your products, programs and services often enough.

One of the reasons many small or solo entrepreneurs do not promote is because they aren't sure what will work or they don't want to feel like they're being pushy or "salesy".  Another reason may be that they are not actively promoting. Speaking is the fastest, easiest way to catapult your business to a whole new level and have clients seek you out.

Developing a speaking strategy can fill your business with eager clients very quickly. It works perfectly whether you're just starting out or have been in business for some time. In fact if you're at the starting gate, pick up the phone this week and start calling local organizations whose members are in your target market and offer to speak at one of their meetings.

Before you seek out speaking opportunities, you'll want to prepare so you get the results you want by creating a signature speech or presentation that gets people interested in working with you.

Here are a few ideas to help youl get started.

What are the top 3 problems people in my market have that I can solve?

- What are the top 3 mistakes people make that create these problems?

- What are the top 3 results I can deliver?

Now develop a 45-minute talk that explains these problems, the mistakes people make that get them there, and the changes that will eliminate these problems. Start with your story or the story of a client who you have successfully helped navigate the path from problem to result. Conclude your talk by mentioning the programs or products that help you clients achieve these results.

Even if you are not permitted to "sell from the stage" you can offer people a wonderful gift–your giveaway–in exchange for their name and e-mail address so you can add them to your subscriber list. Or you can offer the first 5 people who approach you after your presentation an opportunity to pick your brain in a "complimentary phone discovery session".

These efforts will provide ?additional:  subscribers, website traffice, followers online, leads, clients and greater visibility in your market.  All of this translates to increased income.  I'm going to challenge you to make this a key marketing strategy in your business and you'll easily fill your business with eager clients who are excited about working with you.

Interviewing Well for Media or A Job

Maddie Headroom

Business owners need to get their messages heard through multiple disciplines, and job seekers may line up added interviews doing this too.  How you share your story will make all the difference of whether you hear SOLD! or HIRED!

In discussion today with Lillian Brummet of Conscious Discussion, we both agreed it is the human connection or personal story that will have the show host or the hiring manager buy into what you are sharing.  Make your interviews both professional and personal.  Here are a few tips:

1.  Become a story-teller; in 1-2 minutes offer examples of past experience that hold drama or bring a smile and demonstrate your achievement

2.  As the person interviewing shares something you know you have in common, let them know when it's your turn to reply

3.  Return questions and listen with equal sincerity to their answers demonstrating you are there to do your best

These tips apply to working with prospects and clients too.  When they see you are striving to understand them, build the relationship, and deliver your best, they will be far more likely to move forward with your services.

Building upon all of this, will earn you a returning and referring clientele as well as the Smooth Sale!

Today's interview with Lillian Brummet of "Consious Discussions" is for job seekers offering advice ranging from research prior to the itnerview to negotiating at the right time.

10 Tips to Staying Positive While Looking for a New Job

????? ????? | Sky is the limit

Don’t let the media and the news put you down. No matter how bad they say it is companies are always looking to hire the best available staff. If you have the right skills and passion, there will be a job waiting for right around the corner. You just need to remain upbeat and positive. Below is a list of things you need to do in order to help you through the job search process…

Keep a routine: Don’t get into the bad habits of waking up late, sleeping in the afternoons or procrastinating around the house. Get up at your normal time, eat properly and get some exercise (walking is free)!

Volunteering at a church, hospital, homeless shelter or non-profit organization will open your eyes to people who are less off than you and give you a sense of contribution. There is no greater reward than helping people who are less fortunate than us.

Stay up to date with what’s happening in your industry: Don’t let yourself fall behind just because you’re not working. The best approach is to learn more about your particular industry. This way you will be ahead of your competition when it comes time to interview.

Explore potential new careers: It’s never too late to try to learn a foreign language or a new piece of computer software. I remember working with a senior archaeologist of 10 years experience who came to me wanting a change in his life direction. After 6 months of learning Spanish and then travelling through Spain for another 6 months, the senior archaeologist is now a junior English/Spanish translator!

Positive Thinking: Do not focus on the negatives – you need to be able to bounce back. Concentrate on the skills and knowledge you have. Sitting around saying “what if” all the time is only going to further depress you.

Support Group: You may feel as though you’re the only person in your situation without a job, but guess what – you’re not. Reach out to people for support. There are many groups that provide excellent assistance in the areas of resume writing, interviewing, and job hunting. Aside from the secular groups, there are also many faith groups ready to offer you a supporting hand. Don’t feel ashamed or embarrassed to ask for help. Let people help you change your life.

Avoid negative people! Negative thinking is of no value to you. You need to be around positive people and people who can have a positive impact on your life.

Network: maintain contacts and stay in touch with people. Make sure you network with positive people!! Again, avoid negativity. Negative thinking does nothing to help your situation.

Last but not least – manage your expectations. Not every job you apply for will be a success. Don’t be put off by this. Instead, concentrate on the positives and look at what you achieve each day. For example, you could have applied to 3 great jobs, connected with 2 people who are great resources or maybe you found a course or book that will help to improve your skills.

Don’t give up! Jobs don’t find you, you find them!

Growing Sales

UTSI

While everyone is anxious to grow sales this year coming off of a down economy, we need to stop and reassess what will most attract others to what we have to offer.  This came to me as I visited a new dentist today.  She met all of my requirements.

Whether you conduct business to consumer, business to business or are interviewing, the principles are the same.  My preferences are to work with someone who is:

1.  Ethical

2.  On the leading edge for what they do – shows a commitment to education and caring about doing their best

3.  Serving clients well

Are you able to say you do all of the above?  Do you communicate what you do well to attract the attention of others?  Being goal driven and motivated to succeed are key ingedients for making a difference in your business outcome.

In today's online world it no longer is just about you.  It's about helping your following first in order to increase interest.  Delivering excellent content day in and day out and being of service to be found reminds me of the old saying, "Build it and they will come."  The right people will then find you, get to know you and then ask to purchase.

When you are asked for permission to purchase from you ~ that is the Smooth Sale!

Being Up to Date for Improved Results

check list

Unless we make every effort to double check our efforts in every regard that they meet today's standards, and we remain on top of the to-do list, we unfortunately will fall far behind.  But by immediately taking care of the "must-do's" we greatly improve our results.

Some of the ideas in mind are:

- Check your links wherever posted that they are still functioning

- Keep your website calendar up to date

- Review older email and "to-do's" online to confirm you kept promises

Should a follow-up be in question, email or phone that person to make certain they were in receipt of what was promised.  While you are at it, if it wasn't yet delivered, confirm the details of expectations.  And in the rare case you are late, apologize first, and then state, "I will have it by this date…"

Keep a running task list for efficiency sake to eliminate wasted time trying to remember what comes next as well as to promptly complete each one.  If you have a variety of partners or collaborators, keep email file folders for each to maintain records of where you last left the conversation.

Should you need to call someone on a particular date but have a habit of being distracted, use an automated reminder button on your computer.  Have it make a sound 10 minutes prior so that you may take a last look at their website before you actually begin your call.

It is these tiny details that increase our efficiency for getting more accomplished in a day plus keep our associates happy.  All of these tips obviously apply to the interviewing process too for making an excellent impression each and every time. Implementing these will have you advancing at full speed and enjoying the Smooth Sale!

Qualify Connections for Best Results

Lusia meets some man with a gold medal

Have fun reconnecting and building business!

 tumpkins

Most people dread having to pick the phone up to make new business calls or generate new business in any way, shape or form.  It doesn't have to be painful.  In fact, business development can actually be fun.

My favorite method is to review old email that was saved.  When a long time has passed since we last communicated, I indicate so in my first sentence.  "It's been a long time and I was thinking of you…"  From there you can easily expand upon updating and finding ways to help one another.

When the email is personal and people read you have been thinking about them and are wanting to reconnect, particularly if you want to explore helping one another, it's about a 100% response rate that they will say Yes!  Some of the covnersations may not be exciting but it's the few that produce wonderful new opportunity.

Just this week I helped a long-time friend solve a business problem, had a conversation with another where our business doesn't match at this point but he was happy to connect, and I Skyped with someone abroad and with whom I have much in common.  We are exploring further collaboration.

Whether you are seeking work or new business, reconnecting with those from your past is a wonderful way to create new possibility.  The nice thing about it is it is low-key and friendly, plus when you do find the better match, it's always a Smooth Sale!
