“Smooth Sale has completely changed the way I approach selling.  After taking Elinor’s workshop, I realized I needed to do less talking and more listening upfront.  A client doesn’t want to hear a sales pitch.  They want to know whether you understand their problem or pain and what solutions you have for them.  I followed the traditional approach of using PowerPoint slides and collateral right off the bat.  It almost became a crutch.  My objective was to cram as much information as I could to impress my client. 

So what am I doing differently now?  Shortly after taking the workshop, I applied these key principles to my next sales call:  (1) Do your homework.  Understand as much as you can about the client’s business and the problems they’re facing.  (2) Gain an understanding of the situation, problem and pain the client is experiencing by asking leading and open-ended questions.  Don’t try to solve anything right off the bat.  (3) After a clear understanding of the client’s needs, tailor a response in the second half of the meeting that directly addresses those needs.  (4) Sell by value not by price.  Don’t lower your pricing.  Rather, differentiate by value. 

Application of these principles was instrumental in closing two deals.  In both cases, pricing was not an issue because I clearly understood what the customer’s pain was and what the value of my expertise and solutions brought to bear on that pain.  Now, it has become second nature to understand the needs first.
